With so many clinics and spas vying for our attention, knowing which health tests and treatments are worth your dirhams can be dizzying. This month, we look into the treatment packages that promise to have you party-ready for the festive season and find out which warrant the spend…
The Detox Package at Park Hyatt Dubai’s Amara Spa
Who’s it for?
Anyone who starts to feel the mayhem of December’s parties taking a toll on their face and body
There’s no question that December is fun, but all those parties, late nights and lavish meals can leave you looking less than your best. But if you’re feeling bloated and lethargic, or you’re seeing the effects of the season on your skin – hello, breakouts – the Detox Package at Amara Spa could help.
While there’s no question that Dubai’s residents have access to some pretty impressive spa facilities, Amara is still a leader in the field. From the beautiful pool facilities to the expansive suites complete with private, rain shower-equipped gardens, it’s luxurious without being over-the-top, managing to feel like a true escape from the city.
The treatment package begins with a foot soak in your private garden, where you can choose from a range of relaxing music options to listen to throughout your 180-minute session. Select wisely, as the music has a definite role to play – the warm detox massage isn’t the most relaxing experience. Focused on removing toxins from the body, tackling areas of cellulite and relaxing the fascias that contribute to muscle tension, some of the techniques can be a little uncomfortable. However, the difference it makes to my tense neck and shoulders is dramatic, a little pain for large gains. I feel lighter, more flexible and noticeably less tense after just one hour.
Next up is a sea salt scrub, followed by a detoxing spirulina wrap designed to tackle water retention. My therapist warns me that the warm mask will be a little smelly, but once cocooned inside the wrap the scent is barely noticeable, and I have to fight off sleep during the scalp massage I’m given as it gets to work. When it’s washed off, my skin feels noticeably soft and over the next few days also looks more toned and even.
The final step of the package is the purifying marine facial, which works to remove trapped dirt and grime from the pores to even out the complexion. Extractions aside, its a very relaxing experience and a succession of beautifully light products leave my skin looking plump, refreshed and glowing.
The day after my treatment both my face and body look to have reaped the benefits – my skin is glowing, more even and definitely party-ready. That said, the nature of the package is such that it would also pay dividends after the party season, tackling the excesses of the season. Perhaps a before and after treat?

Two more to try…
01 Rebecca Treston Aesthetics
Courtney Cox and Jennifer Aniston are among ultherapy’s celebrity fans, so those opting for the treatment are certainly in good company. Billed as the non-surgical alternative to a traditional face lift, ultherapy uses ultrasound technology to stimulate collagen production, leaving skin firm and toned.
After a cold gel is applied, Rebeca uses lasers to heat areas of the skin. This creates small thermal injury sites, which the body responds to by ramping up collagen production. It’s not an entirely comfortable experience and as the laser passes again and again over the same spots, the intensity can border on painful. It’s bearable, but it’s not something you’d do for fun. However, with no downtime and only a little redness in the hours immediately afterwards, it’s a treatment you can genuinely fit into your lunch hour.
Why try it?
While it’s expensive, the effects are dramatic, making this a viable alternative for those considering surgery. Effects can last for up to two years, so the investment is a long-term one, leaving skin tightened and lifted by up to 30 per cent.

02 Facials at Essa Beauty
We’re almost loathe to tell you about this little hidden gem of a salon, but in the name of public service, allow us to recommend Essa Beauty, where the highly-trained staff can work wonders on even the most tired and temperamental skin.
While Essa Beauty offers a whole range of beauty treatments, it’s the personalised facials that have made its name – the team has collected a raft of awards from brands including Demalogica and Elemis for its stellar work. The Dermalogica facial recommended at my consultation is the only one I’ve found that leaves my congested, patchy skin looking noticeably better, often for more than a month at a time.
Why try it?
While there’s no shortage of spas offering all manner of facials, the well-trained staff at Essa provide highly-personalised treatments that offer genuine results. If you’ve got reactive, sensitive or acne-prone skin, you’ll be in the safest of hands.
