New Anti-Ageing Facial
WHAT MAKES IT UNIQUE
Chi, The Spa at Abu Dhabi’s Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, uses products from an innovative brand out of the United States. Epicuren incorporates a unique protein enzyme that stimulates the cell’s metabolism to lift, tighten and firm. The key element is a slightly sour-smelling vitamin protein complex the company calls liquid gold, which is designed to mimic the cells on the inside of the mouth. As my therapist Melody tells me: “It makes the skin forget to age.”
After a thorough cleaning and steam my knowledgeable therapist Melody applied a bamboo crystal scrub. Then she moved on to
the Epicuren brand’s Enzyme Exfoliant, which is essentially an amazing-smelling cinnamon peel, or fire in a bottle. For the first 20 seconds or so it felt as if my face had erupted into flames and I was just about to yelp “take it off” when her furious fanning kicked in and the enzymes calmed down. After a minute it was just mildly warm. (For anyone who is really worried about a face flame-out, there is always the option of applying an aloe vera gel first to tone it down.) The exfoliant was designed to catch any dead skin cells missed by the scrub, encourage blood flow and plump the skin. Melody then painstakingly brushed two more masks on top: one with a potato starch base and a second, which was infused with camphor, to cool everything down. Just as I was feeling like the mask was getting too hard and thick, she washed it all off. Three more steps from Epicuren: the first a skin-conditioning toner, the last an enzyme protein gel and the middle bit the previously mentioned “liquid gold”.
Because I wanted the most hydration a facial could deliver, Melody finished the treatment off with a rose-infused hydrating moisturiser. Obviously you can’t turn back time in a one-hour facial, but my skin was so visibly glowing, moisturised and brighter when I left Chi that I’d pronounce this one of the most effective anti-ageing treatments I’ve ever tried. The next day when I was greeted with a buoyant complexion in the mirror, the impact was still clearly there.

01 MOLECULAR COSMETICS BY DR BARBARA STURM
Dr Barbara Sturm, a German physician known for her anti-ageing and rejuvenating skin treatments, and for using a patient’s own plasma to create the “vampire facial” popularised by Kim Kardashian, was recently in Dubai to launch her anti-aging line. Free from synthetic fragrances, parabens and mineral oils, at the heart of her product is the natural extract purslane.
Why try it?
When combined with skullcap, another natural extract from a European plant, purslane is anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory, and activates telomerase at the skin’s molecular level, improving skin’s function and appearance. The range includes hyaluronic ampoules, a range of serums, anti-pollution, glow and sun drops.
Dr Barbara Sturm’s Molecular Cosmetics range is available at Harvey Nichols – Dubai, Ounass and Bloomingdale’s. The Discovery Set is Dh421.
