The Dessert Bar

In a nutshell: An old favourite with a new name.

The lowdown: Once known as The Dessert Club Chikalicious Dubai, this Jumeirah stalwart has since dropped the difficult part of its name and has gone forth as simply: The Dessert Club. A new team of chefs are now onboard, creating popular desserts inspired by Middle Eastern sweets. They’re well known for introducing the world to the “dough’ssant”, a croissant/doughnut hybrid, and for having the only “crepe cake” in the UAE.

Best for: Long-term expats with a serious sweet tooth.

In a nutshell: An online-focused bakery aiming to get you desserts quick.

The lowdown: Sugarmoo launched in 2014 with the aim of becoming Dubai’s first online dessert bakery, and in the years since it’s also put down permanent roots in Dar Wasl Mall. Known for unique creations such as their hybrid Cupookies, they also offer vegan and health-conscious sweet treats. The aim is to get desserts delivered in under 90 minutes.

Best for: Anyone with a sweet craving, who wants a sweet treat delivered to their door, pronto.

In a nutshell: Crazy concoctions and desserts on desserts

The lowdown: Scrolling through Freez’s instagram page, it’s hard not to be impressed by what you see – and a little intimidated. With creations like their famed Adore Me (a brownie cake topped with an icecream sandwich), or their Happiness Cake (a gloriously Insta-worthy red velvet cake dripping with layers of white and milk Belgian chocolate), this place calls for patrons serious about their desserts. And in great news: they’ve just started events and home catering.

Best for: Those who can handle a hearty dose of sugar all in one sitting, and those who only like dessert for the social media value.

Magnolia Bakery

In a nutshell: Classic and indulgent American home baking with high-end flair.

The lowdown: Ask a group of people their favourite delivery dessert in the UAE, and at least one of them are bound to mention the banana pudding from Magnolia Bakery. The New York import (the company’s first international location was Dubai in 2010) has amassed a cult-like worship among Dubai crowds – mostly down to its exquisite cakes (and the aforementioned banana pudding. It’s not uncommon to log on to Deliveroo and see it sold out).

Best for: Those in the mood for a hearty, if not a little expensive sweet treat from the comfort of their couch.

The lowdown: The concept at Sukkar is dishing up modernised Khaleeji and Emirati sweet treats as well as regular cakes, cookies and brownies with a Khaleeji or Emirati twist. Choose from desserts with a regional spin such as lotus karak cake, nutella and peanut paratha and chebab katayef (a chebab pancake stuffed with marscapone and dates, and smothered in saffron cardamom syrup).

Best for: Anyone with a penchant for Arabic desserts, keen to try some Arabic desserts they won’t find anywhere else

The lowdown: Kulfi is a popular frozen dessert in India, and Kulfilicious is dedicated to ensuring Dubai kulfi lovers don’t go without. With over 35 varieties of the sweet treat, including Kulfi-based sundaes, shakes and coffees, you’ll be utterly spoiled for choice. The vibrant atmosphere of its outlets and decorations will leave you wondering if you’ve actually been transported to India without realising it.

The lowdown: Founded by sisters Sneha and Ravisha Bhatia in 2010, Sugaholic has quickly grown from a home-based business to a fully fledged bake shop. With Ravisha at the helm of the kitchen, and Sneha in charge of the sales and marketing side, Sugaholic has become a well-known name in Dubai’s baking scene. Their Ferrero Rocher and Peanut Butter and Oreo cakes are fan favourites.

Best for: Those celebrating a special occasion or in need of a winning dessert dish at a pot luck event.

Sukar Desserts

In a nutshell: An “east meets west” concept that’s easy on the wallet.

The lowdown: Ever had knafeh cheesecake? Well, now you can. Sukar Desserts in JLT specialises in regional spins on old favourites – and it’s also their most popular item on the menu. You’ll find all the crowd pleasers too, such as banoffee pie and red velvet cupcakes, and you can order yourself a slice of cake for as little as Dhs20.

Best for: Dessert lovers after something a bit different, without breaking the bank.
