Dima Abdul Kader and Nikki Meftah, owners of online art gallery Emergeast, share their cultural hotspots and hidden gems
Our favourite art gallery
We both particularly love the artist roster at The Third Line Gallery in Alserkal Avenue – they often represent a solid selection of mid-career artists from the Middle East. When it comes to art galleries in the UAE though, we think nothing really tops Emergeast’s online gallery!
Our favourite Middle Eastern artist
We have many favourite Middle Eastern artists and we are constantly on the lookout for emerging talent. Ones to watch? Mohamed Sharkawy, Ahoo Hamedi and Elham Etemadi.
Our favourite street art in the city
Street art is still in its infancy here in the UAE, but the City Walk promenade has some eye-catching artworks displayed around the area. We particularly like the large colourful murals, which remind us of a scene from hip London neighbourhood, Shoreditch.
Our favourite indulgence
When it comes to enjoying the finer things, a spot of retail therapy is the perfect remedy after a long day’s work. I head to Comptoir 102 to browse the unique jewellery collections, while Nikki can be found with her head in a book inside literature emporium Kinokuniya at Dubai Mall.
Our favourite way to unwind
Spending the day at the beach together is great way for us to decompress. We’ve been loving the new La Mer development in Jumeirah. With trendy boutiques, new restaurants and an all-natural playground by the sea complete with over-the-ocean hammocks, it has everything we need to unwind.
Our favourite arty restaurant
We love La Serre Boulangerie. Throughout the year, they dedicate their wall space to showcasing budding artists, and our Aspiring Artists Initiative gives them a chance to exhibit locally to a varied audience. We love seeing passersby stopping to admire their favourite pieces.
Our favourite hidden gem
Our secret spot is Elia Greek restaurant at the Majestic Hotel. The setting, vibe and menu all work together to make you feel like you’re dining in the heart of Athens. It’s like a mini holiday away from the bustle of Dubai.
